หมายเหตุfrom_year marks the Spanish arrival in Mesoamerica, which is when the cited account says the milagro custom accompanied the Spanish into Central and South America. It is a convention, not an event: the sources date the objects' Iberian ancestry far earlier — jet amulets from the Neolithic, the milagro to the ancient Iberians — and date no single American starting point.

The objects arrived with the ships and most of them are older than the crossing. Milagros — small metal or wax body parts offered at a shrine — are traced to the ancient Iberians of the Spanish coast, travelled with the Spanish into Central and South America, and still hold in rural Andalusia, Catalonia and Majorca alongside their American forms. Jet amulets have been cut since the Neolithic; by the end of the Middle Ages the working of jet religious objects was concentrated at Santiago de Compostela and sold to pilgrims on the Camino, and the Asturian fist for a baby went from there into the Spanish Caribbean. Edward Tabor traces that fist further back, to Muslim North Africa, citing Washington Irving's 1829 description of a comparable jet hand among the Moors of Barbary, into Spain during the Moorish period of 711 to 1492 and on to the colonies.

The local material entered the same kit. In Mexico the ojo de venado is a Mucuna seed; México Desconocido traces its career as an amulet to Xichú in northeastern Guanajuato and notes the plant also grew in Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosí and Veracruz, so other regions may have arrived at the use independently. Newborns get one against mal de ojo; adults take one up for a hard stretch; drivers hang one where they can see it.

The argument in this tradition is unusually well documented because the clergy write it down. The Catechism of the Catholic Church condemns attributing a magical importance to otherwise lawful practices and crediting an object's efficacy to its material form. The priest Eduardo Hayen Cuarón condemned the ojo de venado by name, as an amulet and therefore an esoteric practice, malign and the work of Satan. Set against that, a Saint Christopher medal sold in Spanish-speaking markets carries a printed promise — 'Si en San Cristóbal confías, de accidente no morirás', if you trust in Saint Christopher you will not die in an accident — which is exactly the proposition the Catechism warns against, printed on a devotional article and sold in a shop. Both facts are on the record. This atlas prints them side by side and settles nothing.

The markets are where the tradition is legible as a system. At the Mercado de Sonora in Mexico City, established with other public markets by the city government on 23 September 1957 to regulate retail trade, medicinal herbs and magical and occult goods occupy aisles at the back of a single metal-framed nave. The two categories are not separate, and the account says so. Candles, saints' images, cleansings and herbs are bought in the same visit, from the same stallholders, by customers across the income range. In Lima and La Paz the equivalent counters sell the same combination with Andean material alongside.

Inference — the tradition's defining move is a doubling rather than a substitution. A saint does not replace a charm and a charm does not replace a saint; the same object is both, and which one it is depends on who is asked. That is why this record sits beside catholic-sacramentals rather than inside it: the sacramental tradition is defined by the Church drawing a line, and this one by households drawing it somewhere else.

Bought rather than made, in a church, a cathedral, a churchyard stall, a botánica or a market aisle, and then put to work in a named place: pinned to a saint's image or a shrine wall, tied to an infant's wrist within days of birth, hung from a rear-view mirror, set on a home altar, carried in a pocket. Some are blessed by a priest and some are not, and the tradition does not treat that as the deciding fact. Milagros can be offered as a reminder of what the petitioner needs or in thanks for a prayer already answered, and the shape does the pointing — though the code is local, not universal, so a leg can mean a leg or a journey.

Live across Mexico, the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, the Andes, parts of the United States, and the Philippines by the same galleon route. Prices have been published for one object: Tabor gives US$3 to US$10 for an azabache in a botánica and US$9 to US$55 online at the time he wrote, in 2023, and reports that 29 per cent of the wearers he surveyed had chosen the fist and 71 per cent the polyhedron. Quiapo Church in Manila draws millions on 9 January and thousands every Friday, with the stalls outside selling the amulets alongside. The Mercado de Sonora still trades, in a building the city put up in 1957 and has maintained badly since.
