A 103-bed tertiary acute-care hospital in Escazú, west of San José, opened in 2000 and owned by International Hospital Corporation, a Texas company that builds hospitals in Latin America. It holds Joint Commission International accreditation. It is the newer of the two San José hospitals in this directory and the one built, from the start, for a patient arriving from the north.

The ownership is the story. International Hospital Corporation is an American developer; CIMA San José is one of its projects, opened in 2000 as a three-storey tertiary acute-care hospital with 103 beds, a large outpatient department, an emergency department with a trauma room, and surgery with its own recovery floor.

Inference — that is a small hospital by the standards of the groups elsewhere in this batch, and the smallness is the design. A hundred beds in Escazú, twenty minutes from the international airport and inside the suburb where English is already spoken, is a different proposition from a thousand-bed university hospital in Berlin or Seoul. It is closer to a well-equipped district hospital that happens to sit at the end of a four-hour flight.

Costa Rica's national scheme, PROMED, certifies providers for international patients out of the Cámara Costarricense de la Salud. It is membership with a seal.

The hospital states a sixth consecutive JCI Gold Seal, against more than 1,200 standards, and gives no year for the first. It also holds ANCC Pathway to Excellence certification and says no other private hospital in Costa Rica or Central America does. Its payments page names the departments that verify and process a bill and prints no figure for anything.

Trade practice — Escazú works as a single unit: the hospital, the medical office towers attached to it, the hotels along the motorway, and the surgeons who consult in one and operate in the other. A patient arriving for orthopaedic or bariatric surgery is admitted from a hotel a few minutes away and discharged back to it, which is why the recovery stay rather than the ward stay is the long part of a Costa Rican trip.
