The geographer who got here first. His 2006 paper is the most cited single article in the field, and it read the trade as a story about globalisation rather than about hospitals.
Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney, attached to the School of Geosciences, and the author of the first widely read academic treatment of cross-border care. His own university profile describes him as "a social geographer with a longstanding interest in migration and development issues in the island Pacific, notably in Bougainville and Tuvalu".
The story Cited · wellcome-connell-2011
The article is Connell J, "Medical tourism: Sea, sun, sand and … surgery", Tourism Management 2006;27(6):1093–1100. It arrived before the market-research reports, before the accreditation business had scaled, and before any government had written a health-travel licensing regime, and it treated the subject as a geographer treats a labour flow: who moves, in which direction, and what that reveals about the systems they are moving between.
The book followed. The Wellcome Collection catalogues "Medical tourism", John Connell, CABI, Wallingford, 2011, 209 pages, ISBN 9781845936600; Open Library records the same title reissued by CABI in 2013 under ISBN 9781780643694. Retail listings dating the book to 2010 are common, and the library record is the one carried here.
Inference — his framing is why this directory is organised the way it is. A person travelling for an operation is a migration event with a medical reason attached, and the useful questions about it — who can afford to move, which countries export and which import, what the movement does to the health system left behind — are the questions a geographer asks, not the questions a brochure answers.
Notes
English Wikipedia gives a birth year of 1946, uncited, on an article carrying a neutrality banner; it is not asserted here. His university profile's own title is Honorary Professor, not the "Professor of Human Geography" that appears on his book jackets.
