A 352-bed independent non-governmental, non-profit cancer centre on Queen Rania Street in Amman, established in 2001 and chaired by Princess Ghida Talal. It treats patients from across the Arab world and states that it was the first institution in the developing world accredited by Joint Commission International as a disease-specific cancer centre, and the sixth in the world.

The centre is the reason Jordan appears in this directory as a destination rather than only as a source market. About 7,000 new patients a year, 14,000 admissions and roughly 250,000 outpatient clinic visits, staffed by over 400 oncology doctors, 1,100 oncology nurses, about 100 pharmacists and 1,500 administrators and technicians, across three buildings of 108,700 square metres.

What is unusual is where the foreign patients come from and why. The published research on KHCC's non-Jordanian caseload is a literature of displacement: a study of 968 non-Jordanian children treated between 2011 and 2022 found them Syrian (29 per cent), Palestinian (26 per cent), Iraqi (23 per cent) and Yemeni (17 per cent); there are separate published series on Palestinian patients, on Libyan patients over more than a decade, and on central nervous system tumours in patients from conflict areas of the Middle East and North Africa.

Inference — that is cross-border care, and it belongs in the same directory as a knee in Bangkok, but it is not the same transaction. A child brought from Syria for leukaemia treatment is not comparing prices. The field's headline counts of millions of medical travellers absorb both, which is one of the reasons those counts say so little.

Jordan's private hospital sector reports about a billion dollars of annual earnings from patients arriving for care, driven by the region; the association that publishes that figure is a trade body and the figure is revenue rather than patients.

Trade practice — a regional cancer referral to Amman is arranged through embassies, government health offices, charitable funds and the centre's own foundation as often as by the family directly, and the money question is answered by a sponsor rather than by a patient. Treatment is a course rather than an episode, so the stay is months and the escort is a family that moves.
