Clinics say the abortion pill for the tablets and surgical for the procedure. Statutes say termination of pregnancy. Registers say induced abortion and count by gestational week, because the week is what the law usually turns on.
A pregnancy is ended, either with drugs or with a procedure. The drug route is two medicines taken a day or two apart, most of it completed at home, and it is used in early pregnancy. The procedure route empties the uterus through the cervix — by suction in the first trimester, by instruments later — takes minutes, and is done under local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic depending on the gestation and the clinic. Both are day cases; later gestations may take two days and a night.

Medical abortion means drugs — mifepristone followed by misoprostol — and no instruments. Surgical abortion means vacuum aspiration up to about fourteen weeks and dilatation and evacuation after it. Price lists are usually organised by that split and then by week, because both the price and the law change at the week boundaries. Trade practice
The story Cited · bpas-prices
Almost nothing about this journey is medical. The procedure is short and the same in every country that performs it; what differs is whether it may be performed, up to what week, on whose authorisation, and who pays. Where the law at home says no and the law next door says yes, the difference between them is a plane ticket, and that is the whole of the market.
The pricing follows the law rather than the medicine. The British Pregnancy Advisory Service publishes one list in two currencies, sterling and euro, which is the clearest single artefact of cross-border travel in this directory: an organisation states that "97% of the women we see, have their treatment paid for by the NHS (or another government department)" and prices the remaining cases in the currency of the countries its other patients come from. On that list the abortion pill under ten weeks is £622 in total, £180 of it consultation; surgical treatment to fourteen weeks is £1,166; fourteen to twenty weeks £1,373; over twenty weeks £3,044. It notes special prices for women from the Republic of Ireland and the Channel Islands, restricts its pills-by-post service to England and Wales, and points European patients to the Abortion Support Network.
In the Netherlands the price is not published at all, and the reason is the same. Abortuskliniek Stimezo in Zwolle states that treatment is free for women living in the Netherlands, paid directly by the Ministry of Health, with no deductible and no notification of the insurer or the family doctor. For a woman who lives elsewhere it gives a telephone number: "Bel ons op 038 - 421 7000 voor een persoonlijke prijsopgave." A tariff that exists for residents and becomes a phone call for everyone else is a legal boundary with a price attached.
In the United States the split runs inside the country rather than across a border, and a provider's price page shows it: carafem publishes ranges beginning at nothing — in-office abortion pill appointments at 0 to 475 dollars, procedures at 0 to 550 in Atlanta and Washington and 0 to 600 in Chicago — with the floor explained by abortion funds rather than by insurance.
By post, a route with no destination country at all: Women on Web, a Canadian non-profit, states that "A donation of €90 can give one woman or pregnant person access to this essential health service" and describes working across almost 200 countries "in a complex technology landscape that involves Internet censorship".
The country-by-country reading of who may be treated, up to which week, on whose authority, sits on this directory's abortion travel law page. It is not on this one, because it changes and a stale legal row is a wrong one.
How it works Trade practice
Medical abortion: mifepristone, then misoprostol 24 to 48 hours later, with the bleeding and cramping that follow taking hours to a day. Surgical abortion: cervical preparation, then vacuum aspiration or, later, dilatation and evacuation, followed by an hour or two of recovery. Both need a way to reach a clinician if bleeding is heavy or pain is severe, and that is the part a journey home interrupts. Prices are quoted by gestational week and by method, and the consultation is frequently a separate line: on the one full list read for this record it is £180 of a £622 total.

As of 17 September 2026 two countries' provider pages carrying published abortion prices were read for this record, the United Kingdom and the United States, and a third, the Netherlands, publishes a price of zero for residents and a telephone number for everyone else. The dual-currency column on the British list is the closest thing in this directory to a published price for a border.

This page describes a procedure and reports published prices and published statements. It is not medical advice and it is not legal advice, and it takes no position on the law of any country.

| about those numbers | A day case in both routes; the later gestations on the one full price list read here are still priced as treatment rather than as an admission. No source read for this record publishes a wait before flying, and the constraint after a medical abortion is being within reach of a clinician while the bleeding settles rather than the flight itself. Not to be confused with
- In vitro fertilisation — Both are called reproductive travel and both are driven by statute rather than by surgery, but one is sought to end a pregnancy and the other to begin one, and no country's law treats them as the same question.
