Mumbai's medicine runs north to south along the island city. Tata Memorial Hospital stands in Parel, where it has been since 1941, and is the reason people travel to this city at all; Hinduja is at Mahim and Lilavati at Bandra, a few kilometres north on the western line; Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital sits further north again on Jai Prakash Road at Four Bungalows, Versova, in the Andheri West suburbs. The cluster is linear rather than radial, which is what a city built on a peninsula does to its hospitals.

Tata Memorial was established on 28 February 1941, commissioned by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust after Dorabji's wife Meherbai died of leukaemia. Its network registers about 120,000 new cancer patients a year, the main centre records over a million patient footfalls and about 60,000 admissions annually, and roughly 60 per cent of patients are treated free or at a heavily subsidised rate. Those are counts of visits and of registrations, not of individual people, and the free-treatment share is the fact that makes the hospital unlike anything else in this directory.

Kokilaben opened in 2009 with 750 beds at Four Bungalows. Inference — the two institutions are the two halves of the city's answer. A subsidised cancer hospital that takes referrals from the whole of India, and a private tower built for people who will pay, standing eleven kilometres apart and almost never quoted in the same sentence.

Trade practice — the cross-border flow into Mumbai is smaller than into Delhi and weighted toward oncology and haematology rather than cardiac surgery, and much of it arrives from the Gulf and East Africa. This project has read no register that confirms the mix, and carries it as the trade's account.

A private Mumbai hospital quotes an estimate against a room category and a projected stay. Tata Memorial is not a quote at all: it is a registration, a queue and a means test, and a foreign patient enters it as a paying patient on a different tariff from the subsidised one. The distinction is the single most useful thing to know about this city's medicine and the easiest thing to miss on an agent's brochure.

As of 16 September 2026 the harvest point for this hub sits in the middle of the island city, with a 25-kilometre radius that reaches Colaba to the south and Borivali to the north. No Mumbai price has been read off a page into this directory yet.
