The cosmetic trade occupies a few blocks of Gangnam-gu south of the Han river: Apgujeong-ro and the Garosu-gil end of Sinsa-dong, running east through Cheongdam, with the Gangnam-gu Office's own medical-travel desk on the ground floor of the Gangnam Tour Information Center at 161 Apgujeong-ro. The hospitals that do the hard work are elsewhere. Samsung Medical Center is at 81 Irwon-ro in Irwon-dong, in the south-eastern corner of the same district; Asan Medical Center is across the district line at 88 Olympic-ro 43-gil, Pungnap-dong, Songpa-gu, by the river; Severance is north of it all at 50-1 Yonsei-ro in Sinchon, Seodaemun-gu. Subway line 3 links the first two; nothing links them to the third but the 2 line and a change.

Korea's count of foreign patients, kept by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, rose from 60,201 from 139 countries in 2009 to a cumulative 2,760,553 from 198 countries by 2019, with 497,464 in 2019 alone; foreign cosmetic patients numbered 464,452 in 2018, up 16.7 per cent on 397,882 the year before. Those are registrations reported by institutions, and a patient who attends three clinics is counted by each.

Inference — the two Seouls in this record are an artefact of what Korea sells. A dermatology or rhinoplasty patient books a clinic on a shopping street, pays cash, stays a week and is counted; a liver transplant or a cancer case arrives at Asan or Samsung through a referral and a foreign-patient office. They share a city, a visa and a statistical series, and they share nothing else. A directory that treats the series as one number has merged them.

Trade practice — Gangnam's density is the thing people actually travel for: a street where a dozen clinics compete on price within a few hundred metres, with consultation, photographs and a quote on the same afternoon. The Gangnam-gu Office's own list of partner institutions runs to eighty-odd and is a partner list, not a register of the district.

A Gangnam clinic quotes per procedure, often after photographs sent ahead, and takes payment in cash or by card before or on the day. The university hospitals run international healthcare centres that take a referral and a set of records, quote an estimate, and bill against it. Korea's foreign-patient system requires institutions treating foreign patients to register with the state and report, which is where the counts above come from.

As of 16 September 2026 the harvest point for this hub sits between the Apgujeong clinic blocks and the Samsung and Asan campuses, with a 20-kilometre radius that reaches Severance at Sinchon and Seoul National University Hospital in Jongno.
