Surgeons say sleeve gastrectomy. Package pages say gastric sleeve, and put the word all-inclusive in front of it. Nobody's page says irreversible, which is what removing four-fifths of a stomach is.

Around 80% of the stomach is removed to leave a much smaller, sleeve-shaped tube, under general anaesthetic and normally through keyhole incisions. The NHS puts the operation at one to three hours. The removed stomach does not grow back and the operation is not reversible. It is the highest-volume operation travelling to Türkiye and Mexico, and the one whose package price is easiest to find and hardest to compare.

Root. gastrectomy: Greek gaster, the stomach, plus ektomē, a cutting out. Sleeve is the shape of what remains — a narrow tube along the lesser curve, the rest cut away and taken out of the body. The word bariatric comes from Greek baros, weight, plus -iatrikē, medical treatment.

The sleeve suits the package model the way knee replacement does: standard steps, predictable theatre time, a ward stay of a few nights, and a patient who is well enough to fly in for it. The published prices are correspondingly plentiful and correspondingly bare.

Read the exclusion lists and one item recurs. ALO Bariatrics in Tijuana lists among the things its all-inclusive package does not cover: round-trip flights, the travel companion's hotel and meals, pre-operative blood work done in the home country, optional travel-complication insurance, body-contouring surgery — and lifetime daily multivitamins. That last line is the operation's actual long-run cost written into the exclusions of the price that advertises itself as covering everything.

Trade practice — what the packages sell is the week. What the operation needs is the decade: annual bloods, B12, iron, calcium and vitamin D for life, a dietitian within reach, and someone to look at a patient who cannot keep fluids down in month four. Follow-up in the Türkiye packages read for this record runs to six months of video consultations in one case and a lifetime messaging line in another, which is a different promise from a clinic appointment.

Inference — revision is the exclusion nobody prices. A sleeve that leaks, strictures, or is converted to a bypass years later is a second operation, and none of the package pages read for this record states what it costs or who pays for it. What consistently sits outside: flights, the companion's meals, extra nights if discharge slips, medication taken home, lifelong vitamins, and any treatment of a complication once the patient has left the country. Body-contouring surgery — the skin left behind by a large weight loss — is excluded by name and is a second journey.
