a wordPackage price

also: package · all-inclusive package · fixed-price package · surgery package

Hospitals say package. Brokers say all-inclusive. Neither phrase is defined by anybody except the party selling it.

One figure covering a named list of items for one episode of treatment: theatre time, a surgeon, an anaesthetist, a stated number of nights. It is the form almost every price on this site takes. Its meaning sits entirely in the two lists the seller publishes beside it — what the figure covers and what it does not.

Root. package is pack plus the noun suffix -age, 1530s, and first meant the act of packing; the sense of a bundle or a quantity pressed together follows in 1722. The commercial compound arrives much later — the Online Etymology Dictionary dates package deal, "transaction agreed to as a whole", to 1952 — so the word this trade prices in comes from post-war selling, not from medicine.
First seen. 1722 for the bundle sense; 1952 for package deal
A package is a list, not a total. Items left off the list are billed at the ordinary rate. Cited · etymonline-package

The story Cited

Read one and the shape is plain. Bumrungrad's total knee replacement package, JOINT04, read on 16 September 2026, buys three hours of theatre, the nursing and surgical team within those three hours, three nights on the surgical ward, equipment and supplies, medications related to the procedure, the surgeon, an assistant surgeon if needed, and the anaesthesiologist. Its exclusion list is longer: the implant, the first consultation and the follow-up visits, specialist consultations, nights beyond three and any intensive care, blood transfusion, laboratory and imaging before or after surgery, take-home medication, outpatient charges before admission, and complex or emergency cases. The package name itself carries the word — exclude implant.

A package can also be the instrument that hides a unit. Estenove in Istanbul prices hair restoration at 3,395, 4,595 and 6,595 euro for what it calls the maximum number of grafts, and states that it does not price per graft. One seller's package removes the unit of comparison; another seller's package removes the largest line on the bill.

Inference — a package price is therefore comparable only against a package with the same list. A joint package that excludes the implant and one that includes it are two different objects wearing the same word, and the gap between them is not a discount.

How it works Inference

Four things decide what a package figure means: whether the stated nights are a floor or a ceiling and what night N+1 costs; whether the price has an expiry date on the page; whether a complication is inside the package, outside it, or covered by a separate undertaking with its own duration; and whether the implant, prosthesis or device is a line of its own.

Today Inference

As of 17 September 2026 every price on this site that carries the kind package is read off a seller's own page with its date, its inclusion list and its exclusion list beside it. No regulator anywhere requires a common inclusion list, which is why two packages for the same operation cannot be subtracted from one another.
