Cirurgia plástica. Brazil's cosmetic surgery is famous abroad and domestic at home: the survey that ranks it first in the world for surgical procedures also records that only about one patient in twenty comes from another country.
The country that performs more cosmetic surgery than any other and exports very little of it. In the ISAPS survey of 2024, Brazilian plastic surgeons accounted for 2,354,513 surgical procedures — 13.5% of the world's, more than the United States — inside a total of 3,123,758. The foreign share of that work is small. Brazil is on this site as the largest domestic cosmetic market in the world, and as a destination that is smaller than its reputation.

The story Cited
The professional base is deep and old. The Sociedade Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica was founded in São Paulo in 1948 and states "aproximadamente 6.700 cirurgiões plásticos, entre titulares, associados e aspirantes a membros". ISAPS separately estimates 6,497 plastic surgeons in Brazil, second in the world after the United States and ahead of China.
The travel figures are the quiet part. Brazilian surgeons reported a median 5.0% of patients attending from other locations and an average of 8.2% — at, and just above, the worldwide median of 5.0%. The three origins named most often were the United States, Portugal and Italy, which is the shape of a diaspora rather than a package trade.
Where the work is done is its own fact: 76.0% of Brazilian cosmetic procedures were performed in a hospital, against 52.6% worldwide, and 7.0% in a free-standing surgicentre against 16.3% worldwide. Inference — that is the opposite profile to Colombia's, and it is the single most useful comparison on either page: the same operations, the same region, different premises.
How it works Trade practice
Trade practice — Brazil sells to Brazilians. A foreign patient books the same clinic a São Paulo or Rio patient books, in Portuguese, usually through a surgeon's own consulting room rather than a facilitator, and pays in reais. Multi-procedure operating lists are common and the hospital admission is the norm rather than the exception. Nothing on this page describes a state promotion scheme, because this record found none to describe.
Today Cited · isaps-global-survey-2024
As of the 2024 survey year Brazil ranks second in the world for total aesthetic procedures and first for surgical ones, with 769,245 non-surgical procedures against 2,354,513 surgical — the inverse of the United States, where non-surgical work is two-thirds of the total. Both figures are extrapolations from a survey of board-certified plastic surgeons, and neither counts a dentist, a fertility clinic or an orthopaedic ward.
