Island Hospital, on Jalan Macalister in George Town. Indonesian patients, who are most of its foreign trade, say Penang and mean this street.

A 600-bed private hospital on Jalan Macalister in George Town, Penang, founded in 1996 and bought by IHH Healthcare in 2024. It treats about 400,000 patients and performs about 15,000 operations a year, and it sells health screening off a public online store with the ringgit price and the redemption date on every product page.

The story Cited

Penang's inbound trade is a ferry and a short flight from Medan and Aceh, and it is one of the few cross-border corridors in this subject that is genuinely regional rather than intercontinental. Island Hospital was built in 1996 in ten months and grew into that corridor.

It holds hospital-wide accreditation from the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health and from the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International, and in 2025 the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council named it, in the council's own words, "Malaysia's first Flagship Medical Tourism Hospital". The hospital states more than 90 full-time specialists, 1,300 healthcare workers, and that 88 per cent of its doctors trained abroad.

Inference — the online store is the most revealing thing about it. A hospital that sells a screening package the way a shop sells a shirt — add to basket, pay, redeem by a stated date — has decided that a share of its demand is discretionary and price-comparing. That is a different business from a referral hospital, and it is the business that regional cross-border care actually is.

How it works Cited

Screening packages are bought online at a fixed price with the inclusion list printed and the redemption deadline stated. The Executive Health Screening Package, read on 16 September 2026, priced a physical examination, a specialist consultation, a full blood picture, lipid profile, liver and kidney function, diabetes and thyroid screening, hepatitis B and C and syphilis testing, an ECG, a chest X-ray, an upper abdomen ultrasound and eye tests, with refreshments and a hospital bag. Its exclusion is a single sentence, and it is the important one: anything the screening finds is charged separately.

Today Cited

As of 16 September 2026 the store lists the Executive Health Screening Package at 760 ringgit, a Comprehensive Plus package at 2,499 ringgit for men and 2,799 for women, a heart screening package at 1,288 ringgit, a paediatric screening at 380 ringgit, teeth whitening at 1,500 ringgit and a pre-university student screening at 138 ringgit. Packages bought now are redeemable to 31 December 2026.
