Price pages say hernia and then say which one and how many sides: unilateral or bilateral, open, laparoscopic or robotic. Four words, four prices, one page.
A defect in the abdominal wall is closed and usually reinforced with a synthetic mesh, through an open incision or through keyhole ports. The commonest general-surgical operation in most countries. One night on the Bangkok packages read for this record; a day case on the Irish and Australian payer schedules, which price it both ways.

Mesh is the point of contention in this operation's literature and is not a separate line on any package read for this record; where the package says medical supplies used during surgery under the physician's consideration, specific model, the mesh is inside that phrase. Trade practice
The story Cited · bumrungrad-sur05
Eight prices for one operation, on one hospital's page, on one day.
Bumrungrad in Bangkok lists open initial inguinal hernia repair at 199,600 baht for one side and 304,700 for two; laparoscopic at 243,500 and 382,000; robotic-assisted at 350,000 and 430,000; and robotic umbilical hernia repair at 420,000. The route is a price tier, and the second side is not double.
The package that was read in full — laparoscopic, one side, SUR05, prices stated valid until 31 December 2026 — buys two hours of theatre, one night in a single room, the medical supplies and equipment used during surgery under the physician's consideration, the anaesthesia, and fees for surgeon, assistant, anaesthetist, admission, one day of ward rounds and the discharge summary. It excludes outpatient charges and anything before the operation, stays beyond one day or in intensive care, other specialists' consultations, complex or emergency cases, blood transfusion, tests before and after, and take-home medication.
The payer versions do the arithmetic differently. Ireland prices hernia interventions at minor complexity as DRG G10B: EUR 9,046 as an inpatient stay and EUR 5,151 as a day case, the group covering repair of incisional, femoral, inguinal, umbilical or epigastric hernia — five operations in one price. Australia pays the surgeon $556.05 under item 30648, femoral or inguinal hernia repair by open or minimally invasive approach in a patient ten years or over, with a 75% benefit of $417.05, and says nothing about which approach.
Inference — the Thai page prices the technique and the Irish tariff prices the diagnosis, which is why a robot costs 75% more in Bangkok and nothing at all in Dublin. Both are internally consistent. Neither is a price for the same thing.
How it works Trade practice
Open repair is a groin incision, the sac reduced, a mesh laid over the defect, the wound closed — often under general anaesthesia on these pages, though the operation is also done under local. Laparoscopic and robotic repairs place the mesh from inside through three ports, and cost more on every page read here.
Recovery is measured in days for desk work and weeks for lifting, which is why this is the operation most often sold as a day case where a health service is buying and as a one-night package where a hospital is selling. Ireland's tariff prices both forms of the same group and the day case is 57% of the inpatient price.
The queue is the other half. Ireland's National Treatment Purchase Fund counted 115,450 people waiting for an inpatient or day-case appointment at the end of May 2026; NHS England's median wait across all pathways at the end of July 2026 was 12.0 weeks, with 111,379 people past 52 weeks.
Today Cited
As of 17 September 2026 a one-sided inguinal repair is published at 199,600 baht open, 243,500 laparoscopic and 350,000 robotic in Bangkok, with one night included. Ireland's own price for the hernia group is EUR 9,046 as an inpatient and EUR 5,151 as a day case, and the Australian schedule fee for the surgeon is $556.05.

| about those numbers | One night is the stay named in the Bumrungrad laparoscopic hernia package read for this record; Ireland's tariff prices the same group as a day case at EUR 5,151 and as an inpatient stay with an average length of 2.1 days. The eighty-four days is the median wait of 12.0 weeks across all pathways waiting to start treatment in England at the end of July 2026, published by NHS England — an all-specialty median for the English market, not a hernia figure. The ten-day figure is the CDC's guidance not to fly for ten days after abdominal surgery. Four weeks is the span usually quoted before heavy lifting. (2026-07-31) · source |

Not to be confused with
- Gallbladder removal — Both are sold as short keyhole packages; one closes a wall and one removes an organ, and the gallbladder package is the dearer of the two at the same hospital.
