Bam-roong-raat. The name means care of the people; in Bangkok it is simply Bumrungrad, and the taxi knows Sukhumvit Soi 3.
A private hospital on Sukhumvit Soi 3 in Bangkok, opened in 1980 with 200 beds and listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand since 1989. It treats more international patients than any other single hospital in the region and publishes fixed package prices for the operations it sells most, which is why it appears throughout this directory's price table.
The story Cited
Bumrungrad opened on 17 September 1980 as a 200-bed hospital on an initial investment of 90 million baht, and listed on the Thai exchange on 15 December 1989 under the ticker BH. Its major shareholders include Bangkok Bank, Bangkok Insurance and the Sophonpanich family.
It took Joint Commission International accreditation in 2002, among the first hospitals in Asia to do so, and has been reaccredited five consecutive times. Inference — the accreditation mattered less as a clinical fact than as a translation device: it gave an American insurer, and an American patient, a name they already recognised for a hospital eight thousand miles away.
By 2018 the hospital was reporting more than 1.1 million patients a year, over 520,000 of them international, from more than 190 countries. Those are the hospital's own counts of patient visits, not of individual people, and this directory carries them as such.
How it works Trade practice
The international patient side works the way most large Asian private hospitals work: an inquiry desk that answers in several languages, a quoted package for standard operations, a deposit, an interpreter for the consultation, and a discharge summary the patient carries home. Prices for its commonest orthopaedic and spinal work sit on public package pages with a stated validity date. The implant is billed separately from the operation on the joint packages.
Today Cited
As of 16 September 2026 the hospital lists a unilateral total knee replacement at 356,500 baht excluding the implant, and prices its bilateral, robotic and hip packages on the same public pages. The site's footer names the JCI accreditation. Package prices are stated valid until 31 December 2026.
