A capital of some five million people as of 2024, whose private hospitals sit in the modern western half of the city — the economic side, against the historic east — with the King Hussein Cancer Center on Queen Rania Street carrying 352 beds. Amman treats patients referred from Iraq, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Libya and the Gulf, mostly for cancer, cardiac surgery, fertility and transplantation, and its private sector is organised enough to have had a trade association since 1984.

Jordan's inbound trade is older than the phrase for it. The Private Hospitals Association was founded in 1984, began with eight members and now has 48, and started appearing at international medical travel conferences after United States development support from October 2007.

The counts everybody quotes are from that period and have not been replaced. More than 250,000 patients from other countries were treated in Jordan in 2007 — about 45,000 Iraqis, 25,000 Palestinians, 25,000 Sudanese, 1,800 Americans, 1,200 Britons and 400 Canadians — and a similar figure with revenues above a billion dollars is given for 2008. The World Bank ranked Jordan the leading medical travel destination in the Middle East and North Africa.

Inference — those figures are approaching two decades old and their method is not stated on the page that carries them. What they plainly describe is a referral trade rather than an elective one: the largest single groups came from countries whose own hospital systems were under war or embargo, which is a different subject from a cheaper knee.

The King Hussein Cancer Center holds Joint Commission International accreditation and accreditations from the College of American Pathologists, the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Magnet programme and the accrediting body for human research protection — none of them dated on the page read for this record, and an accreditation without its year cannot be read as current.

Trade practice — the Amman route is a referral rather than a web enquiry. A physician or a ministry in the sending country names the hospital, the hospital issues an invitation letter for the visa, and a family travels with the patient — often several, since the escort is part of the arrangement rather than an extra. Payment is state-funded for some sending countries, and cash or charitable for others.
