The story Cited

Mount Elizabeth was the first private hospital in Singapore to perform open-heart surgery and the first to set up a nuclear medicine centre, and its identity has stayed cardiac, oncological and neurological since. The royal family of Brunei built a Royal Suite in it for their own use, later opened to other patients — a detail that says more about the hospital's regional market than any brochure would.

The ownership line runs to Kuala Lumpur and then to the same parent as Acıbadem in Istanbul and Gleneagles in Kuala Lumpur. Inference — a patient shopping across Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore on price may be shopping three times inside one company, and none of the three sites says so.

The Novena figure is the one worth holding: about 30 per cent of patients at the newer hospital come from outside Singapore. That is a share of a named hospital's own caseload, which is a far narrower and more useful number than any national arrivals count.

Neither hospital publishes a price. Singapore is unusual in that the Ministry of Health publishes hospital bill data and fee benchmarks by procedure and by hospital, so a figure for an operation at a named Singapore private hospital exists — it is published by the regulator rather than by the hospital.

How it works Trade practice

Trade practice — the Singapore route is the expensive end of Asian private medicine and is bought for the system rather than the saving: a regulator that publishes bill data, an English-language legal system, and a concentration of specialists who consult in the medical centre and admit to the hospital next door. The patient's surgeon is usually a private practitioner with rooms in the tower, not an employee of the hospital, which is a fee structure a visitor from a salaried system does not expect.

No package price is published by the hospital.
