An Aegean city of 2,938,292 people, whose clinics cluster in the old centre at Konak and in Bornova, where Ege University sits, with a thermal strand 8 km west at Balçova. The sulphurous hot springs there were known in antiquity as the Baths of Agamemnon and now run through a hotel; their waters are held good for rheumatism, sciatica, gallstones and eczema. İzmir sells the same procedures as the larger Turkish clusters — dentistry, hair restoration, IVF, laser eye work — to a smaller and more regional traffic.

The thermal claim here is old enough to have a myth attached. An epigram in the Greek Anthology praises the baths, and the tradition holds that Agamemnon's soldiers bathed in them after a battle and recovered so completely that they no longer needed the physician Podalirius; Aelius Aristides reported that Asclepius first prophesied there.

Tradition holds — this is a claim about water that predates every method for testing one. This directory records that the claim is made, and by whom, and for how long. It does not carry the indications as findings.

The modern trade runs on the same licence as the rest of the country. Since 13 July 2017 a facility treating foreign patients has needed a Ministry of Health authorisation certificate, and so has the agency that sent them.

Inference — İzmir's position in the trade is the position of a third city everywhere: it competes on price against its own capital, not against another country, and the procedures that travel to it are the standardised ones a patient would not cross a continent for.

Trade practice — the İzmir offer is the Turkish offer at a lower density: fewer clinics, fewer languages on the desk, shorter waits for a date. A dental course is booked across two visits or one long stay; the thermal establishments sell weeks rather than nights and count congress traffic alongside patients.

As of 16 September 2026 the 2017 authorisation regime applies here as everywhere in Türkiye. Balçova had 80,721 residents in 2022 and is fully urbanised; its economy runs on three shopping centres and the baths.
